Top Tips

− Keep an eye on your petrol tank: journeys between towns can be long and not all towns have a petrol station so make sure you top up when you can.

− Take lots of water: temperatures can get very high and if you are out hiking for the day then there aren’t usually shops in the parks so having a stock of water is essential.

− Always stop at the visitor centre: each National Park and most State Parks will have a visitor centre, these are great to find out current weather information and any trail updates and they can provide you with the best routes to fit your time frame.

Itinerary

DAY 1: Fly to Las Vegas, Nevada

Arrive into Las Vegas in the afternoon and collect your rental car. Settle in and try and head out into the bright lights of the city to battle the jetlag.
Overnight in Las Vegas

DAY 2: Las Vegas to Zion (approx. 160 miles)

Head northeast into Utah and the town of Springdale, bordering Zion National Park, check into your hotel before taking the tram along Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. To get a taste of the incredible scenery enjoy one of the shorter hikes such as Weeping Rock, a 10-minute walk which ends inside the cliff and overlooks the enormous canyon.
Overnight in Springdale

DAY 3: Zion National Park

Today spend a full day in Zion National Park. Explore to the extreme; walking up to the plateaus or down along the river-bed. The Angels Landing route is a strenuous six-mile hike high on the canyon walls. It’s not for the faint-hearted but the views are spectacular! For another vantage point try Upper Emerald Pools trail, a moderate hike above the waterfalls and the Virgin River below. Alternatively drop in at one of the adventure outfitters in Springdale to hire the equipment you need to hike The Narrows, a slot canyon along the bed of the Virgin River, with cliff walls up to 2,000-ft deep and running for 16 miles. Go as far as you like before heading back.
Overnight in Springdale

DAY 4: Springdale – Bryce Canyon National Park (approx. 85 miles)

On the journey to Bryce Canyon National Park take the beautiful Scenic Byway 89, part of the Heritage Highway, and drive through the colourful sandstone tunnels of Red Rock Canyon as the road turns onto Highway 12. Once inside the national park explore one of the world’s largest collections of hoodoos. Spot the ancient Bristlecone Pine as the trail descends into the canyon on The Queens Garden trail, then take the Navajo Loop back to Sunset Point. Horse rides are also available on certain trails.
Overnight Bryce Canyon City

DAY 5: Bryce Canyon City – Kanab (approx. 80 miles)

Journey south to Kanab Utah’s ‘Little Hollywood’, the set of many Western films. Before venturing into town take a short drive to Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, where mountains of red sand can move up to 50 feet per year. Explore on a half-mile walk along the nature trail to the visitor centre, or for some exhilaration try an ATV ride across the dunes. Moqui Cave, a natural history museum on the way to the park, and Best Friends Animal Sanctuary are also both great places to stop into. There are many tour companies in Kanab offering sightseeing and adventure tours of the stunning surrounding landscapes including Peek-a-Boo slot canyon or the hoodoos and fossils of the Grand Staircase-Escalante. During your stay, be sure to visit Little Hollywood Movie Museum for either lunch or dinner to see their ‘How The West Was Lost’ show.
Overnight in Kanab

DAY 6: Kanab – St George - Las Vegas (approx. 200 miles)

Spend the final day in Utah travelling south towards Las Vegas and your flight home. Stop at St. George and explore the historic downtown, full of galleries, museums and plenty of restaurants for lunch before you depart. Get a taste of the Mormon religion and history at the St. George Tabernacle, or head 20 minutes out of town to visit the undiscovered gem of Snow Canyons State Park – red rock landscapes created by ancient lava flows. After stretching your legs carry on towards Las Vegas airport for your evening flight, waving goodbye to Utah as you cross into Nevada.
